As a result of heavy rainfall between August 29 and September 1, 2024, water accumulated in the River Krishna and its canals, leading to the flooding of numerous residential areas in Vijayawada city and the villages situated along the banks of the River Krishna, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. The excessive rainfall caused water to inundate low-lying regions and homes situated at lower elevations.

Numerous daily wage workers in Vijayawada city and the agricultural sector in villages have lost their primary sources of income, leading to significant hardship. The government has established shelter camps in community spaces such as schools and cyclone shelters, but due to the scale of the devastation, there are considerable numbers of people still in need. Marginalized groups like the Yenadi Tribes and Dalits are encountering difficulties in obtaining necessary relief support.
▲ Senior officials from SFIRD who recognized the urgent need, partnered with Restoration Humanity to provide essential supplies to isolated Yenadi families residing in flood-affected areas.
Efforts Towards Emergency Relief
Restoration Humanity and Society For Integrated Rural Development (SFIRD) delivered a supply of essential food items, including food grains and cooking oil, for 10-12 days depending on the family size and two blankets per family to the affected families.
▲▼ Blankets were distributed to the affected families.
▲ Supplies transported across a flooded area on a simple float.
Medical Camp and Clean Up
SFIRD mobilized local government Primary Health Care (PHC) to organize medical camps in the affected villages to provide immediate health measures and to arrest the spread of communicable diseases in central cluster centers.
Furthermore SFIRD undertook environmental sanitation cleanup assistance by extending support to remove debris to arrest the spread of communicable diseases in the badly affected villages of Repalle sub division.
Restoration Humanity along with Society For Integrated Rural Development would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to you, our readers and supporters, for helping make this relief effort happen, especially when we are inundated by floods in Florida and Andhra, fires in Southern California and Greece, and unrest in the Middle East. We do a little at a time to make a certain amount of impact on the lives of people; every little bit counts.
Could we leave you with this quote from the author of "When Things Fall Apart," as idealistic as it may sound ...
While we do our good works, let us not forget that the real solution lies in a world in which charity will have become unnecessary. — Chinua Achebe
